Solder Stencils


We offer of a large selection of stencils cut with laser, etching or mechanical means.  The stencils include SMT solder paste stencils, SMT BGA and rework stencils, SMT prototype stencils and other types of screens & stencils required for solder paste printing.  Our stencils are all made from stainless steel.

We support stencils with various thickness and in standard or customized size.  Both single-sided and double-sided paste can also be supported

Introduction to SMT Stencils:

The sole purpose of an SMT stencil is to transfer solder paste to a bare circuit board. A stainless steel foil is laser cut creating an opening for every surface mount device on the board. Once the stencil is properly aligned on top of the board, solder paste is applied over the openings (making a single pass, using a metal squeegee blade). When the stainless steel foil is separated from the board, solder paste will remain, ready for placement of the SMD. This process, as opposed to hand soldering methods, ensures consistency and saves time.

Stainless steel foil thickness and aperture opening size control the volume of paste deposited on the board. Too much solder paste causes solder balling, bridging, and tomb-stoning. A lack of solder paste creates insufficient solder joints. All of which compromise the electrical functionality of the board.

Proper foil thickness is chosen based on the types of devices being loaded on the board. Component packages such as 0603 capacitors or 0.020" pitch SOIC's, will require a thinner solder paste stencil than larger packages such as 1206 capacitors or 0.050" pitch SOIC's. Solder paste stencil thickness ranges from 0.001" to 0.030". The typical foil thickness used on the majority of boards is anywhere from 0.004" to 0.007".

1. Example of the prototype stencil as you will receive it.


2. Place the large L-shaped board fixture on a flat surface and tape it down to prevent movement.


3. Place the PCB into the L-shaped fixture.


4. Place the small L-shaped board fixture in the opposite corner and tape down to prevent movement.


5. Align the stencil over the SMT pads and tape the flat edge to the L-shaped bracket.


6. Apply a bead of solder paste along one edge of the prototype stencil.


7. Using squeegee, make a single pass over the apertures to deposit paste.


8. Remove board from fixture.


9. Using the vacuum pick & place tool, place components in the paste.


10. Place temperature marker on the board. Using preferred method, (toaster oven, hot plate, heat gun, etc.) heat board to the paste manufactures recommendations for re-flow solder. The temp marker will indicate temp by changing color.

Why would I need a PCB stencil?

The PCB stencil thickness is determined by the smallest component land pattern. Stencils replace hand soldering of surface mount devices, and the inconsistencies created by hand soldering.

How do I choose my stencil thickness?

The stencil thickness is determined by the smallest component land pattern. If you are not sure, our design staff can choose the optimum thickness based on the data you supply.

What are home base apertures and why would I need them?

Home base apertures are used to control solder balling and tomb-stoning of chip components.

What are Trapezoidal Apertures and why would I need them?

Trapezoidal Apertures are created by distorting the beam on the laser, creating a draft in the aperture wall. Trapezoidal Apertures are effective if you plan on a long dwell time between printing of solder paste and placement of components. The taper in the aperture wall causes the paste to sit on top of itself, rather than sliding out the sides.

What are fiducials? Do I need them on my PCB stencil?

Fiducials are alignment marks. If your screen printer is equipped with a vision system, fiducials half cut in the stencil to allow for the printer to automatically align the board with the stencil. If you are manually aligning the stencil with the board, you could either full cut the fiducials or just use the surface mount pads.

SMT Stencils

All of our SMT Stencils stencils are 100% laser-cut type 304 full-hard stainless steel, ensuring the finest quality finish on the market today. We use a .001" laser beam with 98% overlap creating an extremely smooth hole that provides the best paste release. Most stencil fabricators use a .003" laser leaving mouse bites on the aperture edge. You can choose a prototype stencil, a frameless foil stencil, or a rigid permanently mounted stencil. Both the frameless and framed stencils come in various sizes to accommodate your printer and stencil requirements.
